Beyond These Walls
This is a website for the documentary film Beyond These Walls. As an actively marketed film, all content — images, video, and logo — was supplied by the filmmakers.
My design goal was to create a simple, usable site that did not overwhelm the quiet feel of the film imagery. The film title and brief history seemed visually important, but the site required a lot of content, presented on only one page. In order to keep the title, history, and related imagery visible, I built a stationary sidebar which kept these elements on screen at all times. The right side then scrolls, giving the viewer instinctive access to the rest of the content.
This only works on larger viewports, of course, so for smaller and mobile screens I developed a second title section for the bottom of the page, scrolling in to view much as the closing credits would when watching the film. Images below show an early wireframe, an updated wireframe with concept colors, the final site (narrow view), and the bottom of the page.
Finally, of course, colors. I chose a somewhat muted, monochromatic scheme for the site based on the blue in their promotional material (middle below). The goal was to fall into the background, not invisible but not obtrusive, letting the art of the film carry the weight.
